Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport is the second European airport to achieve the 5-Star Airport Rating from SKYTRAX, the international air transport rating organisation.

SKYTRAX conducted in-depth audit analysis of the terminal services and facilities during 2022. The 5-Star Airport rating is the highest mark of quality distinction awarded by SKYTRAX for an airport, and recognises very high standards of Product and Staff service across the different assessment categories in the Airport environment.

Fiumicino Airport has implemented a very broad range of customer experience upgrades over the last 2-years which includes the opening of the latest Concourse A departure gate area for Schengen flights, enhanced security processing areas, new immigration infrastructure, and widely revamped F&B and shopping facilities.

Skytrax apply ratings for up to 800 customer-facing areas of airport product and service, and this spans over 30 different customer contact points. The Star Rating methodology is unified and consistent for the industry, and all airports from the largest hubs to small regional facilities are assessed using the same base rating criteria which covers the front-line customer experience on the end-to-end journey through an airport.

We are particularly satisfied with this important recognition,” said Aeroporti di Roma CEO Marco Troncone, “which once again demonstrates the company’s efforts to build the airport of the future with greater use of innovation and new technologies, maximum efficiency in the relationship with the environment, further reliability, safety and lots of comfort and value-added services for our passengers. Now that Fiumicino is fully in the league of the world’s best airports, we want to continue to improve standards of comfort and service to allow Rome and Italy to reaffirm their centrality on the international scene“.

The core operational function of the terminal for Schengen and extra-Schengen departures, arrivals, and transfer was noted to be very good. Security and immigration processing are delivered efficiently to passengers with many of the latest systems to expedite and ease customer handling and streamline the customer journey between Concourses A and E for connections.

The airport has continued the rollout of its fabulous interior design concept, and this will culminate with the opening of the newest Concourse A departure gate area in early 2023 which sees the highest standards of internal finishing and decorative appeal, and the airport will continue this project with the remaining terminal areas.

Terminal 3 baggage reclaim has been revamped for opening in 2023 and will transform the arrival facilities and baggage handling for customers. This will coincide with the introduction of new information service concepts to assist passengers both in these arrival and then departure areas.

The airport has rolled out a 100% consistent washroom concept across the areas of the terminal, which is now providing a greatly customer experience.

Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport delivers a very robust and consistent standard of cleanliness and presentation in all customer facing areas which is managed by the airport’s in-house janitorial team.

Edward Plaisted, of Skytrax said; “We are delighted to recognise Rome Fiumicino Airport with the 5-Star Rating for 2023, becoming just the twelfth hub airport in the world and the second in Europe to gain this achievement. Rome Fiumicino Airport has maintained a very clear plan of front line quality improvement over the last 6-7 years, and we are now seeing very tangible upgrades to passenger facilities and customer experience improvements. The level of detail in the changes is commendable, and the airport not only delivers a very good international standard of facilities, but importantly it gives a good sense of place for Rome, and more broadly for Italy.”
